A beautiful new frag can be the beginning of a more colorful reef - or an accidental ride into your display for flatworms, nudibranchs, or other unwanted hitchhikers. Learning how to prevent coral pests is less about being nervous around every new coral and more about building a consistent intake routine. A few careful steps before a frag reaches your aquascape can protect the living jewels you have spent months growing.
The good news is that pest prevention does not need to be complicated. It does require patience, good lighting, and the willingness to keep a new coral separate long enough to see what may be hiding on its tissue, base, or plug.
Know Which Coral Pests You Are Trying to Prevent
Not every tiny creature on a new coral is a problem. Copepods, amphipods, brittle stars, and small feather dusters can all be welcome members of a reef ecosystem. The goal is to identify the organisms that damage corals or multiply quickly enough to become a serious nuisance.
Acropora eaters are among the biggest concerns for SPS keepers. Acropora-eating flatworms can blend into tissue and leave pale bite marks, reduced polyp extension, or patches of missing flesh. Red bugs are tiny, often yellow-orange copepods that may irritate Acropora and limit the polished look and extension that make SPS colonies so stunning.
Montipora keepers should watch for Montipora-eating nudibranchs. These small, pale pests can be difficult to spot, especially along shaded edges and underneath plating colonies. Zoanthid collections may encounter zoanthid-eating nudibranchs, spiders, or sundial snails. LPS corals, mushrooms, and soft corals can also carry nuisance algae, vermetid snails, flatworms, or eggs tucked into crevices.
The key distinction is simple: do not assume a coral looks clean because it looks colorful. Many pests are small, nocturnal, or camouflaged. A coral can appear healthy on arrival while still carrying eggs that will not be affected by a single dip.
Start With Carefully Sourced, Aquacultured Corals
The first layer of prevention happens before the coral is in your hands. Choosing healthy, responsibly maintained aquacultured frags gives you a better starting point than buying stressed, recently imported pieces with an unknown holding history. It does not eliminate risk entirely, but it can reduce the variables.
Look for clear photos, accurate WYSIWYG listings when shopping exact specimens, and vendors that present coral care information plainly. A clean cut base, good tissue coverage, visible polyp response, and a frag plug free of obvious algae or egg clusters are all positive signs. Still, treat every coral as though it could carry a hitchhiker. Even a premium, vibrant frag deserves the same quarantine process as any other addition.
This approach is not about distrusting a seller. It is about protecting a display tank where corals have already settled, encrusted, and become difficult to remove for treatment.
Build a Quarantine Routine Before Corals Enter the Display
A separate coral quarantine tank is the most reliable answer to how to prevent coral pests over the long term. It does not have to be an elaborate second reef. A simple, stable setup with a heater, gentle flow, appropriate reef lighting, and a way to monitor alkalinity, salinity, and temperature can work very well.
Keep the setup easy to inspect. Bare bottoms and removable frag racks make it much easier to see flatworms, nudibranchs, detached pests, and algae. Avoid sharing tweezers, turkey basters, racks, or water between quarantine and the display unless they have been cleaned and dried thoroughly.
The right quarantine duration depends on what you keep and how cautious you want to be. For a mixed reef, several weeks of observation is far more useful than moving a coral after only a few days. SPS-focused systems, especially collections with valuable Acropora or Montipora colonies, benefit from longer observation and repeated inspections. Eggs may hatch after the initial coral dip, so time is part of the treatment plan.
Keep Quarantine Conditions Coral-Friendly
Quarantine should not become a stressful holding box. Match the display tank's salinity and temperature closely, then provide enough light and flow for the coral type. A torch, hammer, mushroom, or zoanthid usually appreciates more moderate conditions than a high-energy Acropora frag.
Stability matters more than chasing perfect numbers. A stressed coral can lose color, close polyps, or shed mucus, making it harder to distinguish acclimation stress from pest damage. Test your water, top off consistently, and avoid placing new frags directly under intense lighting before they have adjusted.
Inspect Every Frag, Plug, and Underside
Inspection is the habit that catches problems early. Before dipping, use white light and look at the coral from several angles. A magnifying glass, jeweler's loupe, or phone camera with macro capability can reveal details that are easy to miss with the naked eye.
Examine the underside of encrusting frags, the base where tissue meets the plug, and any shaded folds. Look for bite marks, egg spirals, tiny moving dots, fuzzy white clusters, unusual snails, or nudibranchs that match the coral's color. On Acropora, inspect between branches and around areas with reduced polyp extension. On Montipora, pay special attention to the rim and underside.
If the coral is mounted on a plug, consider removing it from the plug when practical. Frag plugs can hold algae, eggs, vermetid snails, and pests well beyond the visible coral tissue. Cutting or carefully separating a healthy frag from its original base can reduce the number of hiding places. This is not always the best choice for a delicate, freshly cut, or heavily encrusted coral, so use judgment rather than forcing the process.
Use Coral Dips as a First Defense, Not a Guarantee
A coral dip can dislodge many mobile hitchhikers before they enter quarantine. Follow the dip product's directions exactly, use display-quality saltwater for the dip container, and match temperature as closely as possible. After the recommended dip time, rinse the frag in a separate container of clean saltwater before placing it in quarantine.
Watch the dip container closely. Flatworms, amphipods, small worms, nudibranchs, and other organisms may detach and become visible against the bottom of a light-colored container. This is useful information, but it is not a pass to skip quarantine.
Most common dips do not reliably destroy every egg. That is why a single dip followed by immediate placement in the display is one of the most common ways pests establish themselves. Repeat dips during quarantine may be appropriate for some pests, but timing and treatment vary by species. If you identify a serious pest, research a targeted treatment plan rather than repeatedly dipping a coral until it is exhausted.
Prevent Cross-Contamination Around the Tank
Pests do not only travel on whole coral frags. They can move in water, on tools, on macroalgae, and on used equipment. Keep separate containers for acclimation and dips. If you borrow a coral cutter or buy used frag racks, clean them before they touch your system.
Avoid pouring shipping water, store water, or another hobbyist's tank water into your display. Acclimate the coral, then discard the transport water. When trading frags with friends, apply the same careful process you would use for any online purchase. A trusted fellow reefer can still have a pest they have not noticed yet.
Be especially selective with macroalgae, live rock, and loose coral rubble. These can be wonderful additions, but they bring more unknown surfaces than a clean, mounted frag. If biodiversity is your goal, add it deliberately and quarantine it separately when possible.
Catch Trouble Before It Spreads
Once corals are in the display, regular observation becomes your backup defense. Inspect your collection during normal maintenance, and occasionally use a flashlight after lights-out. Some pests are far easier to spot when corals are retracted or when nocturnal creatures emerge.
Watch for a pattern rather than one imperfect day. A coral may close after shipping, a dip, or a change in flow. But recurring bite marks, progressively fading tissue, unusual bare patches, declining polyp extension, or a pest seen on more than one frag deserves immediate attention. Remove the affected coral to quarantine if possible, inspect nearby corals, and avoid moving tools or water between systems until you understand the issue.
Do not rely on fish or invertebrates as your only pest-control plan. Some wrasses and other natural predators may help with certain mobile pests, but they are not dependable egg removal tools and may not suit every reef. A predator can be a useful layer of support; quarantine, inspection, and targeted treatment are the foundation.
A thriving reef is built one deliberate addition at a time. Give each new coral the same thoughtful welcome - inspect it, dip it appropriately, observe it in quarantine, and add it only when you are confident it is ready to become part of your display.
